Quick answer: After clearing immigration at Incheon Airport, take the elevator or escalator down to B1 (basement), follow the blue Airport Railroad / AREX signs, buy an Express ticket at the counter or a kiosk for ₩11,000 (₩15,000 from Terminal 2), go through the gate, board on the Express platform (left side of most signage), and ride 43 minutes to Seoul Station. From there, Line 1 and Line 4 subways connect to central hotel districts. T-money cards work on the All-Stop train but not on Express.

Step 1: Clear Immigration and Collect Your Baggage
The AREX journey begins after you've finished everything the airport requires. Before you even look for the train:
- Immigration. Budget 20–45 minutes depending on arrival time. Incheon's e-gate system works for most nationalities that registered a K-ETA; the rest go through manual booths. For K-ETA application details, see our step-by-step guide.
- Baggage claim. Check the arrival board for your flight's carousel. Belts 1–28 serve most international arrivals at Terminal 1; Terminal 2 uses belts A–F.
- Customs. Green channel (nothing to declare) takes under a minute. Red channel adds 5–15 minutes if you're flagged.
Only once you're past the green customs door are you actually "inside Korea" and able to board the AREX. A common first-time error is to rush toward the train only to realize you still have to walk back for luggage.
Step 2: Find the AREX Entrance at B1 (Basement Level)
Both terminals have a dedicated AREX station at B1, connected directly to the arrivals hall by elevator, escalator, and covered walkway. There is no street-level exit required.
Terminal 1 (most carriers — Korean Air, Asiana, United, Delta, etc.). Once through customs, walk into the central arrivals hall. Signage changes color once you hit the public area: look for the blue "Airport Railroad / 공항철도" arrows. Take the escalator or elevator labeled "B1 Transportation Center" — about a 5-minute walk from most customs exits.
Terminal 2 (Air France, KLM, Delta SkyTeam partners, Korean Air, and some others). Terminal 2 is newer and the AREX station is even closer — you'll see the entrance almost immediately after exiting customs. Follow the same blue Airport Railroad signs.
If you're confused at any point, ask at any information desk (every arrival hall has at least one staffed desk until around 10 PM) and they'll point you to the AREX elevator. Staff speak basic English.
Step 3: Choose Express (Non-Stop) vs. All-Stop
AREX runs two services from the same station, on different platforms. Pick the right one before you buy.
AREX Express (direct to Seoul Station): 43 minutes from Terminal 1, 51 minutes from Terminal 2. ₩11,000 / ₩15,000. Reserved seats, overhead luggage racks, Wi-Fi, charging ports. Runs roughly every 30 minutes. Best for: anyone staying near Seoul Station, Myeongdong (one subway stop away), or northern neighborhoods, and anyone with heavy luggage or an early morning flight who values a guaranteed seat.
AREX All-Stop (14 stations between ICN and Seoul Station): 60–70 minutes to Seoul Station, with stops including Gimpo Airport (useful for domestic connections), Digital Media City, and Hongik University (Hongdae). ₩4,500–₩6,000. Runs every 5–10 minutes during daytime. Standing room is common during rush hour. Best for: travelers staying in Hongdae (exit at Hongik Univ. Station, 50 minutes from ICN), budget travelers, and anyone with light luggage.
Quick decision rule: if your hotel is in Hongdae, take All-Stop. If your hotel is anywhere else in Seoul, take Express — the time savings and guaranteed seat are worth ₩6,500.
Step 4: Buy Your Ticket or Tap Your T-Money Card
Your payment method depends on which service you picked.
Express tickets are sold at three places:
- The AREX Express counter inside the B1 station. Staff speak English. Credit card or cash. 2–5 minute wait.
- Automated kiosks next to the counter. English, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean menus. Credit card only. No wait.
- Pre-booked online via Klook — voucher is exchanged at the counter for a physical ticket. Often ₩500–₩1,500 cheaper than walk-up rates.
All-Stop uses the same fare system as Seoul's subway. You have two options:
- Single-journey ticket from a basic kiosk at the regular subway gate (₩500 deposit is refunded when you return the card to a machine at Seoul Station).
- T-money card — tap at the gate. If you don't have one, the arrivals hall has multiple vendors selling T-money cards loaded with your chosen balance. Pick one up before going downstairs to save a step.
T-money cards are the single most useful travel tool in Korea. Load ₩30,000–₩50,000 on arrival and you'll use it for subways, buses, taxis, and convenience store purchases across your entire trip.
Step 5: Board at the Correct Platform
AREX B1 station has separate platforms for Express and All-Stop, and they look similar enough that first-time travelers occasionally board the wrong one.
- Express platform: usually labeled in purple/pink signage, with a dedicated fare gate. Only the Express ticket activates this gate — T-money will beep refused. Train cars are painted with "EXPRESS" branding, have reserved seat numbers, and carry fewer standing passengers.
- All-Stop platform: blue signage, standard subway fare gates. Trains look like regular Seoul Metro cars with "AREX" colors.
At Terminal 1 the Express train departs from the platform nearest the main escalator; at Terminal 2 it's on the right-side platform as you face the tracks. The reservation on your Express ticket shows both the train number and a specific car (호차) and seat (좌석). Korean numerals can be unfamiliar — if in doubt, show your ticket to any staff member on the platform and they'll point you to the right car.
Trains depart on time. A 6-minute-late boarding at Incheon can mean a 40-minute wait for the next Express.
Step 6: Arrive at Seoul Station and Transfer to the Subway
Seoul Station is a major transit hub. The AREX platform is underground; you'll emerge into a large concourse with the following connections:
- Seoul Subway Line 1 (dark blue): serves Jongno, City Hall, and northeast Seoul.
- Seoul Subway Line 4 (light blue): direct to Myeongdong (one stop), Hoehyeon, Dongdaemun.
- KTX intercity rail: for Busan, Gyeongju, Daegu, Gwangju, etc. Different concourse — follow "KTX" signs.
- Airport Limousine Buses: if you need a bus to a hotel district, the bus bay is on street level outside Exit 2.
For the most common hotel transfers:
- Myeongdong: Line 4 toward Oido, one stop to Hoehyeon or two to Myeongdong. ₩1,400 with T-money.
- Hongdae: Line 2 from nearby City Hall station (one stop north), though most Hongdae-bound travelers should have taken All-Stop directly.
- Gangnam: Line 4 south to Chungmuro, transfer to Line 3 to Gangnam. 35 minutes total. ₩1,550.
- Itaewon: Line 1 to Seoul Station, transfer to Line 4 to Samgakji, transfer to Line 6 to Itaewon. Easier to take a taxi from Seoul Station — ₩8,000–₩12,000.
If you're exhausted after a long-haul flight, taxis depart from Exit 2 at street level. Use only the official orange or silver metered taxis — unmarked "black cars" parked near tourist zones are unofficial and charge 2–3x meter rates.

Common Mistakes First-Time Travelers Make
Boarding the All-Stop thinking it's Express. The two services run from adjacent platforms and the signage is similar in English. Express has a dedicated gate; if your ticket won't let you through that gate, you bought an All-Stop ticket. Double-check before you descend.
Trying to use T-money on Express. The Express service uses physical reserved tickets, not tap-in fare cards. T-money cards are refused at the Express gate. Buy a ticket at the counter or kiosk.
Getting off at the wrong station. On All-Stop, Hongik University Station (for Hongdae) is 12 stops from Incheon Airport. It's easy to lose count — watch for the "Hongik Univ. (홍대입구)" announcement and the Line 2 transfer symbol.
Missing the last train. AREX Express runs roughly 5:30 AM to 11:45 PM. After midnight, your only options are airport limousine bus or taxi (₩60,000–₩90,000). If your flight lands late, verify train schedules on the AREX official site the same day.
Not getting a T-money card. Even if you take Express from ICN, you'll use T-money constantly in Seoul. Pick one up at the airport arrivals hall before going to the AREX station — a pre-loaded card is available at every convenience store kiosk.

FAQ
How much does the AREX Express cost in 2026?
₩11,000 ($8.25 USD) from Terminal 1 and ₩15,000 ($11.30 USD) from Terminal 2, one-way. No discount for round-trip. Pre-booked Klook tickets are occasionally ₩500–₩1,500 cheaper. AREX All-Stop costs ₩4,500–₩6,000 depending on exit station, paid via T-money or single-journey card.
How long does AREX take to Seoul Station?
Express: 43 minutes from Terminal 1, 51 minutes from Terminal 2. All-Stop: 60–70 minutes. These are fixed rail times — neither service is affected by Seoul's road traffic, which is why AREX beats both taxis and limousine buses during rush hour.
Can I use T-money for AREX Express?
No. The Express service requires a physical reserved ticket purchased at the AREX counter or kiosk. T-money is refused at the Express fare gate. T-money does work for the All-Stop service and all other Seoul subway lines.
Which is faster — AREX or a taxi from Incheon Airport?
AREX Express is faster in almost all scenarios. A taxi takes 60–80 minutes on a clear road and 90–120+ minutes during Seoul's peak traffic (7:30–9:30 AM and 5:30–8:00 PM). Express is a fixed 43 minutes regardless of road conditions.
When is the last AREX train of the night?
AREX Express runs approximately 5:30 AM to 11:45 PM. All-Stop runs slightly longer, until around 12:20 AM. If you arrive after midnight, take a taxi (₩60,000–₩90,000) or the 24-hour airport limousine bus (₩17,000–₩18,000).
Do AREX trains accept credit cards?
Yes. All Express ticket counters and kiosks accept international Visa, Mastercard, and American Express. The AREX website accepts the same plus KakaoPay for Korean users. Cash is also accepted.
